WASHINGTON COUNTY, AL — The West Alabama Highway project, a major multi-year infrastructure initiative, continues to advance with active construction in Washington County and surrounding areas.
The project aims to transform a two-lane highway into a four-lane divided route connecting Mobile and Tuscaloosa, enhancing economic development, improving access to essential services, and increasing safety for rural communities along the corridor.
The Alabama Department of Transportation and construction contractor Brasfield & Gorrie have completed geotechnical exploration along the route. Ongoing activities include clearing, fence relocation, structure removal, and utility relocation.
As of the latest update, work is actively progressing on specific segments, including clearing and grubbing on the Dixon Mills Bypass and earthwork and culvert installation on the Gallion Bypass.
A dedicated project field office has been established in Demopolis to serve as the central hub for this multi-year effort, which is expected to employ approximately 700 workers at peak construction.
Local officials have long advocated for improved highway infrastructure in Washington County. The county's Road and Bridge Department continues to manage routine maintenance including road grading, paving, signage maintenance, and bridge replacements alongside the state project.
Public information and outreach events have been held throughout 2025 and 2026, with further public meetings planned as construction continues. Residents can visit westalabamahighway.com for the latest updates.
