MT. VERNON, AL — A oversize load transport crashed in an active construction zone on County Road 70 near Mt. Vernon on Wednesday, injuring 1 person.
The crash occurred approximately 10:45 p.m. in an ALDOT construction zone on County Road 70 at the narrow stretch near Calvert. The oversize load transport rear-ended a work vehicle.
Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reports distracted driving may have been a factor. Construction workers were present but no workers were injured.
The driver, a 67-year-old Illinois man, was not injured. A second vehicle was damaged but its occupants were not injured.
ALDOT has been conducting drainage improvements on the stretch of County Road 70 for several months.
Chatom Volunteer Fire Department responded. The construction zone was shut down for more than 4 hours. ALDOT said the project timeline is not expected to be significantly affected.
Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reminds drivers to slow down and stay alert in construction zones. Fines are doubled for traffic violations in active work zones.
