CHATOM, AL — Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, the Washington County School District has enforced a new policy prohibiting the use of cell phones, smartwatches, and other wireless communication devices during the school day.
The policy was adopted to comply with the Alabama FOCUS Act (SB92/Act 2025-220), which requires school districts across the state to limit student access to personal electronic devices during instructional hours.
Under the new rules, all wireless devices must be powered off and stored in lockers or vehicles upon arrival at school. Students who violate the policy face disciplinary action, and repeated offenses may result in devices being confiscated for the remainder of the school day.
Washington County School District Superintendent said the policy is designed to reduce distractions and improve student focus in the classroom. The district serves approximately 2,442 students across eight schools with a 16:1 student-teacher ratio.
In related news, Chatom Elementary School was recently recognized for academic excellence, with 100% proficiency in reading for both second and third-grade students, making it one of only 11 schools in Alabama to achieve this distinction.
The district has also issued warnings regarding a dangerous social media trend involving the insertion of metal objects into student-issued Chromebook charging ports, which can cause electrical shorts and fires. Students found participating in this behavior face a $350 fine for replacement costs.
Parents and guardians with questions about the new device policy are encouraged to contact their child's school administration or visit the Washington County Board of Education website.
