FRUITDALE, AL — Washington County's emergency communications system has received a major upgrade, improving radio coverage for first responders across the county.

The upgraded system includes new digital radio infrastructure, additional repeater towers, and improved dispatch capabilities.

The previous analog system had significant dead zones in rural areas, creating dangerous communication gaps for law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel.

The upgrade was funded through a combination of federal homeland security grants and county funds.

Emergency Management Director said the new system will dramatically improve coordination during multi-agency responses and severe weather events.

Testing and training on the new system is ongoing, with full transition expected to be complete within 60 days.
