DEER PARK, AL — A runaway hazmat tanker barreled through Deer Park after the driver reported a complete brake failure on County Road 96 on Friday.
The incident occurred approximately 3:15 p.m.. The driver of the hazmat tanker radioed for help after discovering the brakes had failed while descending a grade on County Road 96 south of the Tombigbee River crossing.
The truck traveled approximately 2 miles through Deer Park before the driver was able to guide it into a field.
Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) had been alerted and had begun clearing traffic from the truck's path. Remarkably, the driver escaped with minor injuries.
The driver, a 52-year-old Illinois woman, was transported to Springhill Medical Center in Mobile in stable condition. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) praised the driver's quick thinking in avoiding populated areas.
Calvert Fire-Rescue responded as a precaution. The truck was carrying peracetic acid. FMCSA will investigate the brake failure.
The incident highlights the importance of proper brake maintenance on commercial vehicles, particularly those operating on hilly terrain.
