FRUITDALE, AL — A reported gas leak in Calvert forced the evacuation of several homes on Thursday as emergency crews worked to locate and repair the source.

The Washington County Volunteer Fire Department and local utility crews responded to reports of a strong gas odor around 7:15 a.m..

As a precaution, approximately 3 homes within a two-block radius were evacuated while crews assessed the situation.

Utility workers identified a damaged gas line and made repairs within several hours. Residents were allowed to return after the area was cleared.

No injuries or fires resulted from the leak, though officials praised residents for reporting the odor promptly.

Residents are reminded to call 911 immediately if they detect a gas odor and to evacuate the area without using electrical switches.
