JACKSON, AL — Investigators suspect driver fatigue caused a refrigerated truck to crash on State Route 69 near the Deer Park town limits on Wednesday.
The crash occurred approximately 3:15 p.m.. Washington County Sheriff's Office reports the refrigerated truck crossed the center line on State Route 69. The driver, a 31-year-old Illinois man, reportedly told investigators he had been driving for an extended period.
A review of the driver's electronic logging device (ELD) records revealed potential hours-of-service violations. Federal regulations limit commercial truck drivers to 11 hours of driving within a 14-hour window after 10 consecutive hours off duty.
A second vehicle was damaged but its occupants were not injured. dusk conditions at the time.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck was carrying nitric acid.
Leroy Volunteer Fire Department and EMS from Springhill Medical Center in Mobile responded. State Route 69 was affected for approximately 2 hours.
FMCSA records will be reviewed as part of the investigation. The trucking company may face additional regulatory scrutiny if violations are confirmed.
