SILAS, AL — A commercial vehicle crashed on County Road 46 after the driver swerved to avoid a deer near the Tombigbee River bridge on Friday.
The crash occurred around 10:30 a.m.. Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) reports the commercial vehicle was traveling westbound on County Road 46 when a deer entered the roadway. The driver swerved and lost control, overturning the truck.
The driver, a 67-year-old Georgia woman, was not injured. Two additional vehicles sustained minor damage while avoiding the crash scene.
The truck was carrying sand. military supplies from the truck was scattered across the roadway.
Wildlife-vehicle collisions are common on rural Washington County roads, particularly during deer season and at dawn and dusk when deer are most active.
Vinegar Bend Volunteer Fire Department responded. County Road 46 was affected for approximately 6 hours.
Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) advises drivers, especially commercial vehicle operators, not to swerve for animals as the resulting crash is often more dangerous than the animal strike itself.
