CHATOM, AL — Chatom Elementary School has earned statewide recognition after achieving 100% proficiency in reading for both second and third-grade students, making it one of only 11 schools in Alabama to reach this milestone.
The achievement reflects years of focused effort by teachers, administrators, and families working together to prioritize early literacy in the district.
Washington County School District, which serves approximately 2,442 students across eight schools, has made reading proficiency a top priority. The district maintains a 16:1 student-teacher ratio, lower than the Alabama state average of 18:1.
The district's overall graduation rate stands at 92%, which compares favorably to the state average of 88%. However, district-wide proficiency levels in other areas remain a focus for continued improvement, with recent data showing average math proficiency at 16% and overall reading proficiency at 46%.
Chatom Elementary's success has been highlighted as a model for other schools in the region. Educators have attributed the results to consistent implementation of evidence-based reading instruction strategies and strong family engagement.
The Washington County Board of Education is expected to formally recognize the school's achievement at an upcoming board meeting. Community members have also taken to social media to congratulate the students and staff.
