ST. STEPHENS, AL — A cement mixer strikes bridge guardrail on the County Road 80 bridge near the railroad crossing on Thursday, injuring 4 people.
The incident occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. on the narrow two-lane bridge over a tributary of the Tombigbee. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) responded to the scene.
The cement mixer, loaded with steel beams, overturned while approaching the bridge at excessive speed. scattered thunderstorms may have contributed to the incident.
The driver, a 35-year-old Tennessee woman, was transported to Southwest Alabama Medical Center in Thomasville in stable condition.
The bridge sustained minor damage to the guardrail. ALDOT engineers were called to assess the structure.
County Road 80 was closed for more than 10 hours while the bridge was inspected and the vehicle was removed. Traffic was detoured through State Route 56 and County Road 22.
Many bridges in rural Washington County are aging and have weight restrictions. ALDOT has identified several for future replacement or repair as part of the state's infrastructure improvement plan.
